Day 3 at the 2013
Worlds |
The 24th of July is a State holiday in Utah,
"Pioneer
Day," the day in 1847 that the Mormon Pioneers came into the Salt Lake
valley in Northern Utah. There are festivities almost like what
you find
at the 4th of July, Parades, fireworks, the whole bit! The SUHPA
was able
to put an entry in the Parade here in the St George area advertising
the World Tournament.
There were about a dozen or so Cadets and Juniors who helped hand out
fliers,
hold the lead banner and also pull the portable ("Dixon") horseshoe
courts.
Pitching in the parade were Utah Men's State Champion "Roy Buhler"
and World Junior Boys Champion Dalton Rakestraw of Illinois.
Together
they put on quite a show, leaving the parade crowd with "oooo's &
aaaahhhhs." Through the 1950's, World Champions Fernando Isais
and
Ted Allen pitched in the Salt Lake City Parade. A special thanks
goes out
to Dalton and Roy for helping continue this rich Utah/Worlds Horseshoe
tradition! |
